Datça-Knidos
Culture and Art Festival are home to bull fight shows.
During the festival bulls are brought into the fight area with
traditional Turkish music and folkloric dances. Bulls are all
addressed by the name of the man tends for them. Before the
fights begin they organize a hen night for the bulls and paint
them in henna.
The fights are managed by a referee called "değnekçi".
The referees tease the animals and sometimes they receive the
first attack from the bull themselves.
Apart from the summer
season Datca peninsula offers excellent trekking grounds. The
rich flora envelops you with the scents of many wild herbs and
flowers. We highly recommend you discover Datca and its hidden
waterfalls this way.The
most valued hand craft of Datca is the needle work. The pure
silk that is used is locally produced. The locals carefully
tend for their silkworms and once the growth is completed the
cocoon is softened in hot water which frees silk filament ends
for reeling. The raw silk is twisted into a strand
sufficiently strong for weaving or knitting. Those
silk threads than take the shape of flowers and many other
designs and turn into home decoration and covers.
Needlework is sold at the Saturday market as well as
boutiques and souvenir shops. You can also purchase directly
from the village homes which are located 3-
5 km
from Datca centre.
